Like most of us I spend entirely too much time sitting on my butt working on computer. Until 2 days ago the only exercise I got was rushing to & from showings. And while I'm not what many would consider overweight, I haven't felt good for some time.

About 20 yrs ago, I was the picture of health and enjoyed an active life. Skiing (both snow & water) were my passion. Although I'd been a type-1 diabetic since I was 5, never had any diabetic issues or complications. The year I turned 30 I was diagnosed with a rare neuromuscular disease. Mayo Clinic described it as "peripheral motor neuropathy with local conduction block". It's now better known as MMN *multifocal motor neuropathy*. About 10 yrs ago I gave up all remaining physical exercise as certain extremities no longer functioned (after breaking my ankle 4 times in 3 yrs I developed a certain "allergy" to anything to do with running).

Now here I am, about to turn 50, and I'm putting on weight *gasp*. Never had a problem with weight until I quit smoking this past summer, and now I feel like shit. My diet sucks (especially for a diabetic) - I need help and advice. Again, for the past 10 yrs *divorced* I've only eaten at most 1 meal / day (dinner). Going a day or so with no food wasn't unusual for me (I can adjust my insulin intake with multiple shots, and I'm addicted to caffeine). I also drink entirely too much Diet Coke (can you say between 3 - 4 litres / day)? That's roughly 10-12 cans of the stuff .....

I'm trying to force myself to eat a little bit in the am (yogurt) and again at lunch, in hopes I can convince my body not to store fat. Ideally I'd like to lose at least 10-12lbs. Can anyone help me? Diet suggestions? What are some good sources of "good fat"?

HI Jim,
Since you are diabetic, I think they have a good eating plan, or may have some suggestions. I like the biggest losers website too- however to get the good stuff you have to "join" for 3 months.

Hi Jim, there are many online places you can go for help with a diet plan. I like one called Calorie King. It is a wonderful place where I can actually count my daily calories and exercise. They have a University where you can learn to make better choices. Good luck with the contest!

Jim, I left this on Jay's page but it might help you, too. http://www.healthbolt.net/2006/12/08/what-happens-to-your-body-if-you-drink-a-coke-right-now/

Small steps reap big rewards!

I'm conflicted. Spent much of yesterday reading and I don't know what I should consume anymore. Everything I read says "Don't eat meat". Some authors go to the extreme of calling meats "flesh". Meat (especially beef) is my best friend. I'm doomed .....

Jim, if you love meat, then you might want to consider being light on the carbs. That's the Atkins/South Beach approach. Without the carbs, the body doesn't have a way to process the meat/fat, and it all just flows through.

The trouble is, without carbs you have no energy to exercise, and without exercise to burn the fat, it's very tough to make a lasting difference. I see the dilemma with your situation, but perhaps swimming or station exercises, like the elliptical machine or a stationary bike can be added in.

And somehow, you have to cut out most of that Diet Coke. You'll feel fatigued without the caffeine...possibly for months, but just fight through it. Headaches may be another problem.
